If you want to be a writer but aren’t sure where to start, this post is for you. Maybe you have never written anything outside of school, or have a completed novel sitting on your computer, or a notebook full of poems no one else has ever read. Let’s all take our first next steps together!
Why 26 Tiny Paintbrushes?
Terry was inspired to name the group “26 Tiny Paintbrushes” because when we sit down to write, we have a blank canvas and 26 letters to help us paint our masterpiece.
The sky is literally the limit with only 26 letters!
What will you create? Join us for our next meeting on January 14, 2018 at 7:00 PM at the Vine Cafe in Douglasville, GA.
Practice makes perfect!
- Develop a daily writing habit (15-30 minutes a day is a great starting place to start)
- Freewriting (writing down whatever comes to mind and see where it takes you)
- Writing prompts (a Google search will reveal lots of websites dedicated to this)
- Blogging (free places to start a blog include blogger.com and wordpress.com)
Get your writing published – start small
It’s amazing to see your words in print. These resources can help you get practice, feedback, and validation of your writing abilities:
- Start your own personal blog or blog about a topic you love (again, wordpress.com and blogger.com make this an easy process)
- Lots of great websites, magazines, and journals are hungry for great articles, stories, and poems.
- For short stories (https://thewritelife.com/where-to-submit-short-stories/)
- For poems (https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poetrymagazine/submit)
- For blog-type articles (medium.com, The Huffington Post, Hubspot, Mashable, Lifehack, ThoughtCatalog, EliteDaily, etc. – also find out if your favorite blog or website accepts guest submissions)
I hope that this list of beginning resources has helped you get some ideas about where to start. If you have your own ideas or suggestions, please "Ask a Question".

I attended my first group meeting last week and left the meeting not only inspired by the wealth of talent and commitment of those present, but the stance the group takes about writing — that writing can be a means by which we can work towards a more just society. I can’t wait for the next meeting.
