Practice makes perfect!
- Develop a daily writing habit (15-30 minutes a day is a great starting place to start)
- Freewriting (writing down whatever comes to mind and see where it takes you)
- Writing prompts (a Google search will reveal lots of websites dedicated to this)
- Blogging (free places to start a blog include blogger.com and wordpress.com)
Get your writing published – start small
It’s amazing to see your words in print. These resources can help you get practice, feedback, and validation of your writing abilities:
- Start your own personal blog or blog about a topic you love (again, wordpress.com and blogger.com make this an easy process)
- Lots of great websites, magazines, and journals are hungry for great articles, stories, and poems.

- For poems (https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poetrymagazine/submit)
- For blog-type articles (medium.com, The Huffington Post, Hubspot, Mashable, Lifehack, ThoughtCatalog, EliteDaily, etc. – also find out if your favorite blog or website accepts guest submissions)

I attended my first group meeting last week and left the meeting not only inspired by the wealth of talent and commitment of those present, but the stance the group takes about writing — that writing can be a means by which we can work towards a more just society. I can’t wait for the next meeting.
